Physical Therapist Assistant

Welcome to the LCC Physical Therapist Assistant program update page!

THANK YOU for your interest in the new Labette Community College Physical Therapist Assistant Program. The support expressed by area healthcare providers for offering clinical sites and ultimately employment opportunities has all been extremely positive. The response from potential students for the program has been tremendous, and we look forward to working with each of them throughout the application process. The pilot class will be chosen by a combination of test scores, GPA, reference letters and an interview with the PTA Program staff, a process similar to our other Allied Health Programs.

  • When will the new PTA program actually start?
The Commission on Accreditation for Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) determines when a new program has permission to start classes. CAPTE accepts and reviews new program applications only four times per year, and programs may not start classes until CAPTE has given its approval.

The application for a new PTA program typically takes several months to complete, and it must be completed by the new PTA director. LCC is currently working to identify and hire the new director for our PTA program.

With the hiring of a new program director during the current Spring semester and submission of our new program application in late Summer or early Fall, LCC will be following the CAPTE timeline which would allow us to begin classes in the Spring 2011 semester.

  • When will application packets be available? When will they be due?
Our timelines for providing application packets and the application due date are dependent on the hiring of the new PTA program director, who must be involved in the development and review of applications. Specific dates and materials will be forthcoming shortly after the new PTA program director is hired.

  • Will the LCC PTA program be accredited?
Several people have asked if the LCC PTA program will be an accredited program.

CAPTE does not accredit new programs when they begin - new programs are designated as "candidates for accreditation." During the final semester for the first class of students to complete the program, CAPTE conducts an extensive review to determine if the program will be accredited.

  • What courses do I have to have to apply for admission to the program?
Students applying for admission to the PTA program should have completed or be currently enrolled in the following courses at the time of their application:

    Course Number Course Title Hours
    ENGL 101 Composition I 3
COMM 101 Fundamentals of Speech 3
    PSYC 101 General Psychology 3
    PSYC 201 Developmental Psychology 3
    MATH 100 Intermediate Algebra OR
    MATH 106 Applied Math 3
BIOL 130 Anatomy & Physiology (with lab) 5
        Computer Elective 3

    Total General Education Requirement 23

All Courses must be completed successfully prior to the start of the Spring 2011 semester.

See the full PTA program course of study here: PTA Program Course Listing

  • What are the other requirements for applying for admission to the PTA program?
LCC is still finalizing application requirements, but here are the minimum requirements as they stand right now for an applicant to be considered for the program:
    1. High School graduate or equivalent
    2. COMPASS reading score ≥ 75 or ACT ≥ 17
    3. Minimum GPA 2.5 in all college coursework
    4. All general education courses should be complete prior to admission to program; in special circumstances, concurrent enrollment for some courses may be permissible with permission of the Physical Therapist Assistant Program Director.
    5. Completion of LCC Physical Therapist Assistant application, including:
      • Letter of application
      • Letters of reference (3)
      • Transcripts
      • Documentation of minimum of 16 hours of observation, volunteer service or work experience in a Physical Therapy Department.
      • Additional materials (to be determined)

To be certain you receive the most current information about the application process, check this website periodically, and make sure you have provided your information for our contact list to Nancy Newby (see contact information below).

  • Who should you contact for more information about the PTA program?
